Guadalupe Island in Mexico, located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) west of the Baja California peninsula, has been repeatedly confirmed to provide the best possible conditions for shark observation. These conditions are unparalleled by comparable sites in South Africa and Australia.
Great white sharks are abundant around the island. These great animals are believed by scientists to come here to feed on the elephant seal colonies along the island’s coast. Shark cage diving is a specialized underwater activity that involves entering a metal cage to observe and photograph sharks in a controlled environment. Guadalupe Island is also home to other large pelagics, such as amberjacks and even whales, but the main event here is undoubtedly the great whites.
Experience a great encounter
From July to August, when the weather is at its warmest, is the best time to go to Guadalupe to see groups of young male great whites.At the end of summer, around October, there is a possibility of observing the giant females. These impressive creatures can reach lengths of up to 18 ft (5.5 meters) and typically travel and hunt independently.
