Magdalena Bay is protected from the ocean by Magdalena and Santa Margarita islands, which keep the water calm. This makes it a great place for California gray whales to live, give birth, and raise their young. These whales, which can grow to 35 tons and over 16 m (50 feet) long, travel south from Alaska to spend the winter in the bay, giving birth and raising their young, and mating.
If you’re lucky, you might spot some amazing marine life! You might see a shark, gray whale, dolphin, turtle, or a school of fish. If you’re really lucky, you might even see a bait ball of sea lions or marlins! And if you’re really, really lucky, you might even see a humpback whale, sei whale, orca, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, mako, or bottlenose dolphin!
At Santa Margarita, you’ll find a variety of fascinating wrecks, including the SS Westbank Park, a World War II merchant ship, and the USS H1 Seawolf, a World War I submarine. You can swim, snorkel, and go diving!
Experience the beauty of nature in all its glory.
The islands, the mangroves, the bay, and the vast ocean all offer incredible views just waiting to be explored. You’ll also see the incredible efforts being made to conserve the environment, which will leave you feeling inspired.
