Caves

The Riviera Maya’s underground water system is of exceptional quality, and has led to its recognition as a diver’s paradise.

The state of Quintana Roo is located on the Caribbean coastline of the Yucatán Peninsula. Here, all the freshwater is contained within the state’s underground river system, which is characterized by the presence of numerous shallow caves.

The subterranean cave systems of Quintana Roo are characterized by their intricate decoration and extensive networks, with a total exploration route of over 250 kilometers.

The availability of water within the caves has enabled the Mayan communities to thrive, providing a reliable source of water for centuries. These caves feature specific openings referred to as D’zonot” –water hole–, otherwise known as “Cenotes“, through which water flows.
