As it is the largest coral structure in the Gulf of Mexico and the only reef in the state of Yucatan.The Alacranes Reef is a group of five islands: Perez, Muertos, Pajaros or Blancas, Isla Chica, and Desterrada. These islets remain pristine, serving as a primary habitat for a diverse array of species within the Gulf of Mexico.
The crystalline waters of the Alacranes Reef, with an average depth ranging from 18 to 25 meters, provide a habitat for a myriad of species, including turtles, colorful fish, snails, lobsters, manta rays, and nurse sharks. Additionally, the submerged ruins of ancient ships have been observed in the area, contributing to its biodiversity and ecological significance.
