Isla Contoy is located approximately 19 miles north of Isla Mujeres and 31 miles from Cancun, has been designated a protected nature reserve, with a primary focus on conservation efforts. The government has implemented stringent regulations, limiting daily visits to 200 individuals and prohibiting overnight stays, with the aim of preserving the island’s natural integrity. This policy ensures that visitors can experience the island in its pristine state, characterized by its tranquility, natural splendor, and unspoiled environment.
The island’s biodiversity is notable, supporting over 150 bird species, a habitat that attracts numerous birdwatchers. Avian species present include frigatebirds soaring overhead and herons wading along the shoreline.The waters surrounding the island are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, a habitat that supports diverse marine life, including colorful fish, stingrays, and occasionally sea turtles.
